Professor Zhangput an emphasis on the increasing importance of legal Englisheducation. To support his idea, he cited a remark proposed in thefourth Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee，saying we should reinforce the cultivation of inter-disciplinarytalents in tackling foreign-related lawsuits, since students proficient in both law knowledge and English language are scarce injob market.
Professor Zhangalso spoke about the disadvantages of current Legal Englisheducation. Animportant branch ofESP(EnglishforSpecificPurpose)as it is, the situation is depressingly far-off owing to problems such as imperfectteaching system, indefinite teaching objectives, and out-of-date teaching mythology. He proposed to set legal English as the next step of the reform forEnglishmajors and law majors.
He furtherelaborated how to buildlegal English teaching as a discipline: What on earth is legal English? Why should legal English be studied? How should legal English be learned? How shouldcollege English teacherstransform themselves? These questions provoked reflective thoughts among present teachers and students.
Additionally, heintroduced the National Legal English Certificate Test and relevant learning resources for legal English.
